Events During The War
The beginning of the war
The war began in 1939 on September 1st when Germany invaded Poland. They advanced with a technique called blitzkrieg, or “lightning war.” This would hopefully shock their opponent and allow for the country to be overruled quickly. Not until September 27 did the capital Warsaw Poland surrender and the Germans took over. The United States decided on September 5th 1939 that they would remain neutral throughout the fighting in Europe. The America First Committee The America First Committee was an interest group against Americas entry into World War II. This committee had many members and was one of the largest anti- war organizations in American history. The committee started on September 4th, 1940 and was brought to an end on December 10th, 1941 which was only three days after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The Attack on Pearl Harbor The attack on Pearl Habor took place on December 7th , 1941. It was a surprise attack conducted by the Imperial Japan Navy against the United states naval base in Pearl harbor, Hawaii. The attack was intended to prevent the U.S Pacific Fleet from interfering with the Empire of Japans attack on Southeast Asia. The attack lasted only two hours but was very devastating. More than 2,000 American soldiers died along with many sailors. They next day President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan. Three days after Japanese allies Germany and Italy also declared war on the U.S. This was the point where the United States after two years into the war finally joined. |
